A Backend Developer with passion for their work and creative ideas that will help to realise our best business ideas and serve travellers in the greatest way possible.

What you’ll be doing

This is a hands-on role that will take our digital experiences to a new level of excellence. You will ensure the readiness of our backend related projects and initiatives, for instance: 

  • Building components in the eCommerce system;
  • Further improve our distribution platform for our B2B channel;
  • Developing the mobile pass – our ultimate product for our customers when they are travelling through Europe.

Your primary focus will be to design and the development of all server-side logic to implement Eurail's strategy to become the go-to platform to travel through Europe. You will ensure high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front-end, taking into account scalability and peak traffic. You will also be responsible for integrating the front-end elements built by your colleagues into the application so a basic understanding of front-end technologies is necessary.

You and your team will build, maintain and support our existing sites throughout the product lifecycle, including implementing functional enhancements and resolving issues. Your playground will consist of an AWS environment (elastic compute cloud, lambda, kubernetes) with Adobe Experience Manager as the CMS and commercetools as the eCommerce engine.

You will join forces with our IT team and be part of the backend cross functional team, including other backend developers, agile tester, product owner and scrum master. You will work closely with the architect and our support team. All our teams work according to the SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) where you get the chance to work alongside other teams like marketing, sales, finance and CS.

What we’re looking for in you

In terms of your experience and strengths, we’re looking for; 

  • Familiar with, or happy to learn how to use our main back-end system commercetools;
  • Experience with Java 11, Spring stack;
  • Advanced knowledge of OOP, design patterns, decomposition and how to create reusable and testable code;
  • Familiar with developing (non-relational) databases such as DynamoDB (or at least theoretical knowledge);
  • The ability to underspend problems/tasks;
  • The ability to produce clear code based on companies’ standards;
  • The ability to deliver complete features (requirements – design – implementation – testing – deployment) to production;
  • Good understanding of accessibility, security compliance and the OWASP security principles;
  • Experience with cloud engineering is a big plus;
  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker is a big plus;

In addition, its bonus points if you have…

  • Knowledge of the SAFe framework
  • Experience with any scripting languages
  • A love of sustainable travel!
